Functional Resilience is an approach founded on a science based approach to healing and adaptation. When Dr. Jared began his physical Therapy program he had a desire not to just learn how to get people better but rather how to get them better than the place that brought them to him in the first place. This inspired him to take a deeper look into the issues that cause many of the primary issues for people as we age and hasn’t looked back.
Dr Jared completed a research project while in his DPT program based around knee arthritis based off of a simple lesson on the Optimal Stimulus for Regeneration or OSRs of tissues. Something that sparked his interest was that cartilage or the stuff that prevents our knees from being bone on bone is regenerated by compression and decompression. This sparked intrigued due to the common perception of arthritis being caused by wear and tear. Rather use is the thing that makes the greatest difference in cartilage because it is the only way that it can be nourished since it lacks a direct blood supply. Instead as cartilage is compressed and decompressed nutrients move in and out of the cartilage like a sponge.
Along with this study Dr Jared learned of what makes up a healthy knee is less about the cartilage but more about the capacity and strength of the knee. Through the study we looked at the Asian Squat as a mode for waiting in line in those who are able to perform a squat to the ground they are more likely to have radiographic arthritis or bone on bone arthritis but have no symptoms. This is a matter of strengthening the right muscles and tendons surrounding the joints to optimize pain reduction and increase function.
All of this to say this has inspired Dr Jared to look deeper into what is going on and to appreciate the body, pain, and healing. For one the body was made to be in a constant state of break down and repair. This is how we build muscle, increase bone mass, and even improve our function. These processes still continue until the day we die, but they need the proper stimulus and amount of stress to continue to grow stronger instead of weaker. As for pain it is an alarm system alerting our body to most commonly areas of non trust. Pain does not always equal harm. Not every image that you get back correlates to the pain that you are having.
Before we move forward we need to take a look at where we are. Overall exercise is nothing more than unnecessary movement and that is why it can feel silly to perform. Unfortunately this unnecessary movement has become way more necessary especially for those who are older because overall movement has been on a decline due to modern comfort and our overall sitting trends. The movement capacity that we have is forged by tireless effort from our youth. If you recall the energy and movement of a baby progressing into a toddler you will see what it really takes to be able to have the capacity to walk alone. We are riding on the coat tails of our youth with gradual detraining over a career of 30+ years.
This is where Functional Resilience comes in we are not looking to reinvent the wheel we are looking to assist older adults in entering into spaces that their body’s have avoided over the years due to small amounts of movement variance. When we go from sitting to walking and maybe some stairs on occasion our body begins find short cuts and in a sense prunes certain muscles from the normal recruitment patterns. This could leave our butt, our thighs, our back, our neck, and absolutely our shoulders all out of sorts. Certain muscles are doing jobs that they are not good at but there hasn’t been enough of a stimulus to the area to reorganized them. That is what Dr Jared is here to help with gradually reintroducing this stimulus, decreasing pain, building confidence, conditioning the body, and overall improving our quality and capacity of activity. At retirement the body may feel warn out, but it has the capacity to rebuild and there is hope.
Functional Resilience is a 12 week program and yes it will be 5 days a week baring holidays other special occasions. This consistent programing and exposure to proper stimulus will gradually rebuild the body as time goes on. There will be a ground up approach to this course with constant education on anatomy, physiology, and exercise so that after this 12 week course you will be able to understand why and what exercise you can do to maintain your function and continue to improve post discharge. We desire for this course to really feel like going to school and the thing that you get out of it is knowledge, fitness, and freedom. This won’t be like any older adult fitness class that is around and the main reasoning is the solutions based programming.
Let us help you take control of your health and know how to do it the right way!
